So, what is ArtPrize?
ArtPrize is an open, independently organized international art competition, which takes place for 19 days every other fall in Grand Rapids, Michigan. ArtPrize began nearly ten years ago as an experiment and since then it has been unlike anything the world has ever seen. For the 19 days, three square miles of downtown, Grand Rapids is transformed into an open art assemblage where art from around the world shows up in every space of downtown Michigan, and the best part is that it is completely free for the art enthusiasts.
According to the Art Newspaper’s annual “Big Ticket List,” ArtPrize is amongst most attended public event in the world in 2014 and 2015 attracting over 500,000 visitors. In 2018, 1,400+ artists from 41 states and 40 countries will be exhibited in 165+ venues. From museums, bars, public parks, restaurants, theaters, hotels, bridges, Laundromats, auto body shops, vacant storefronts and office spaces art will be displayed—art that makes you feel, art that makes you reflect, art that makes you wonder.
Where do I find the Best Art?
With over 170 venues in a 3-square-mile area and 2 venues outside of downtown, you will not see everything in one day. For newcomers, it might prove hard to maneuver around the busy streets. To help you get the most out of the event, ArtPrize has set up eight visitor service centers that serve as welcome stations, information centers, and voter registration sites offering real-time information on the venues and events specific to each hubs’ surrounding.
All hubs also offer ArtPrize carefully mapped out plans, event guides and metro passes to help kick-start your ArtPrize adventure. Art, however, is all about discovery and the best part is finding your personal favorite pieces. So if you see something in the distance catches your eye do not hesitate to it check out.
How do you Vote for your Favorite Artist?
In a few weeks’ time, the ArtPrize 2018 will kick-off. With over 1400 entries this year, the competition for the $500,000 in prize money is stiff and the best part is that you the public have a say on who wins the mega $200,000 prize and another $200,000 prize awarded by a jury of art experts. So how do I make sure my favorite piece wins? It’s quite simple. When you arrive in Grand Rapids, you will want to:
- Register to Vote! It is quick, easy, and essential to adding your voice to ArtPrize. You can register in person at the Hub or any of the other voting sites (you must be at least 16 years old and need a government ID). However, if you are not of age yet, once you are within the ArtPrize boundaries, you can register to vote using the ArtPrize mobile app, which uses your geo-location to get you started. You must be at least 13 years old and register within the ArtPrize boundaries. Personnel at one of the eight ArtPrize hubs are available to help you be registered.
Therefore, if you are visiting ArtPrize from out of town, hopefully, you have already booked your hotel. I hope this year brings more fun than last year.
