Exploring El Paso

So, you’re visiting El Paso, Texas. There is a lot to do in this wonderful city, and lots of surprising hidden gems that simply must be explored. Whether you spend the day hiking at Hueco Tanks, checking out cave paintings and learning about the Apache Plains Warriors that once called this area home, or you take a ride thousands of feet in the air for the ultimate view of the city – there is lots to do and so much to enjoy on your visit. Here are just a few fun ideas for your time visiting El Paso, Texas.

Check out Dinosaur Tracks

Did you know that dinosaur tracks were discovered nearby as recently as 2002? It’s true. Geologist Eric Kappus discovered the 97-million-year-old tracks near Sunland Park. You can explore the park where you’ll find carious footprints dating back to the Cretaceous Period. You can even visit an actual fossil bed and an area that shows proof of a massive herd that passed through. Explore on your own or schedule a private tour and you can get all the information about the area, how fossils are made, the Rio Grande River Basin and more.

Explore from Above

Get the very best views of the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez area with a trip up to the top of Ranger Peak in the Franklin Mountains State Park. The cable cars – which were once used to maintain radio transmissions antennas in the area – are now open to the public and maintained by Texas State Parks. You can get a round-trip ride for $8 per adult, which takes you on a four-minute ride above a vast canyon that is more than 240 feet deep in many areas. You’ll also be treated to a huge panoramic view of more than 7,000 square miles, three states and two countries.

Check out Hueco Tanks

Not far from El Paso is the Chihuahua Desert, where you’ll find a large group of natural rock basins – also known as huecos. These formations were used as a source of water for thousands of years – some dating back as early as 6,000 BCE. You’ll find pictographs all over the Huecos, as more than 3,000 different rock drawings are there to be explored, many by the Mescalero Apache Plains Warriors. You can take a guided or self-guided tour of the rock imagery, just be sure to stop by the information center to get all the details needed to explore the area safely.
