The Dinner Detective is America’s largest interactive comedy murder mystery dinner show, and this guide walks you through exactly what to expect from the moment you arrive to the moment the killer is unmasked.

A murder mystery dinner is not a movie, and it is not a play where you sit quietly in the dark. It is a fully interactive experience where the audience becomes part of the story. At The Dinner Detective, that means real conversation, real laughs, a real multi-course meal, and a live investigation that unfolds right at your table. No two nights play out exactly the same way, since guests drive so much of the action through their questions and theories.

The Basic Idea Behind a Murder Mystery Dinner

At its core, a murder mystery dinner combines two things people already love: a great meal out and a compelling story. Instead of watching a mystery unfold on a screen, you are seated in the middle of it. A crime takes place in front of you, a cast of Prime Suspects is introduced, and it is up to you and your table to figure out who did it before the night ends. The comedic, true-crime tone keeps things light and playful rather than tense or frightening, so it is more laugh-out-loud than edge-of-your-seat horror.

What makes The Dinner Detective especially fun is that the performers are not dressed up in costumes or standing on a stage. They are seated right there in the room, dressed just like every other guest. That means the killer is hiding in plain sight, and honestly, so is everyone else. Any guest, including you, could end up pulled into the show as part of the storyline.

How the Night Unfolds, Step by Step

While every show has its own unique clues, jokes, and twists, the overall flow of the evening follows a consistent rhythm designed to keep you engaged from start to finish.

Arrival and check in: You arrive, check in at the host table, and receive your detective materials before finding your seat. The Interrogation Reception kicks off right away, giving guests time to mingle and start quietly sizing up the room.

The mystery begins: The show starts promptly. A crime is committed right in front of everyone, and the Prime Suspects are introduced. The killer is already seated somewhere in the room, and it is up to you to figure out who.

Dinner and interrogation: As the multi-course dinner is served, the investigation heats up. You will question suspects, compare notes with your tablemates, and start piecing together the story, all while enjoying your meal.

The big reveal: Once the clues have been gathered, guests submit a final Answer Form. The killer is unmasked live in front of everyone, and the guest with the sharpest detective instincts walks away with the Top Sleuth Prize Package.

Because the story is happening throughout the entire room rather than on a single stage, every seat offers a great view of the action. Expect some fun surprises along the way too, including sound effects and brief lighting moments that add to the atmosphere without ever feeling over the top.

Who Can Join the Investigation

Participation is one of the best parts of the night, but it is never required. Plenty of guests love simply watching the story unfold and offering theories at their own table, while others jump right in and grill the suspects directly. Either way, you should know that other guests may interact with or question you at any point, since performers are hidden among the crowd and nobody knows for certain who is playing a role.

Shows are rated 12+, largely because the humor can lean into adult-oriented territory and because some guests may be enjoying drinks from the venue’s cash bar. Teens are welcome to attend if their guardians are comfortable with that kind of atmosphere. That said, infants and small children are not permitted at any show. This no-tiny-tots policy exists so that every guest can enjoy an uninterrupted evening, and it helps keep the show running smoothly for everyone in the room.

What Is Included With Every Ticket

One of the reasons murder mystery dinners are such a popular night out is the simplicity of it all. You buy a ticket, show up, and everything else is taken care of. Every Dinner Detective ticket includes the following:

Entry to the Interrogation Reception

A full multi-course dinner

Wait staff gratuity (beverage service and performer gratuity are not included)

Entry into the Top Sleuth Prize Package competition

Access to a full cash bar on-site for guests who would like a drink

Dietary accommodations, including gluten-free, vegan, and other allergy or illness related needs, are available as long as they are noted at the time you place your order. This makes it easy for groups with varying preferences to enjoy the same show together without anyone feeling left out.

Getting the Most Out of Your Evening

A little bit of preparation goes a long way toward making your night smooth and enjoyable. Here are a few practical things to keep in mind before you go.

Plan to arrive about 10 to 15 minutes before check in begins so you have plenty of time to settle in.

Guests arriving up to 30 minutes late can still be admitted, but you will need to wait for a scene break before being seated so the show is not disrupted.

Bring your confirmation page and a valid photo ID to check in quickly at the host table.

Dress code is business casual or dressy casual, essentially a normal Saturday night out. Nice jeans are perfectly fine, but shorts, t-shirts, and hats are not permitted.

Seating is at shared round banquet tables, and groups can be seated together, so this is a great outing for couples, friend groups, or larger parties.

Since all seats offer a great view of the story and every table sees every clue, there is no bad seat in the house. Whether you are close to the action or across the room, you will not miss a beat.

Want to Raise the Stakes? Try the Suspect Package

For guests who want to add an extra twist to their night, the optional Suspect Package secretly frames one member of your party as a Prime Suspect in the story. It is a one-time fee per party that varies by location, availability is limited, and it is meant as an add-on rather than a replacement for General Admission tickets. It is a fun way to make the night even more memorable for a birthday, anniversary, or milestone celebration within your group.

A Great Fit for Private and Group Events

Beyond the regularly scheduled public shows held on weekend nights several times a month year-round, The Dinner Detective also hosts private and group events. This makes it a popular choice for corporate gatherings, holiday parties, anniversaries, proposals, and other special occasions where you want an evening that feels different from the usual dinner and a show. The same interactive comedic mystery format can be tailored into a private experience just for your group.

A Few Good to Know Policies

Like most live ticketed events, there are a handful of policies worth knowing ahead of time. All sales are final, and refunds or cancellations are not available. Shows only get cancelled if the venue itself cancels. If your plans change, a Case File Transfer allows you to reschedule for a $20 per ticket non-refundable fee, as long as it is requested at least 7 days in advance. Gift certificates are also available if you would rather give the experience as a present than book a date yourself.

Ready to Solve Your First Case?

So, what actually happens at a murder mystery dinner? A great meal, a live unfolding crime, a room full of hidden suspects, and a chance to prove you have got sharper instincts than everyone else at the table. It is part dinner out, part comedy show, and part detective work, all rolled into one evening you will be talking about long after dessert is cleared. Whether you are planning a date night, a birthday celebration, or a get together with friends, The Dinner Detective delivers a night unlike any other dinner reservation you have made.

Ready to Crack the Case?

Buy Show Tickets
Gift Certificates
Private Events

If you have ever wondered what actually happens at a murder mystery dinner, you are in the right place.
